A large crowd turned out for the candlelight march in memory of Alessandra Matteuzzi, who was murdered by her former partner on the street despite complaints filed with the police. In the procession, the prospect of a government led by the far right is worrying.

“Women are poorly protected, it will be even worse,” denounces Chiara, from the Bologna commune association, who also fears attacks on the right to abortion.

“In the Marche region [este]where Fratelli d’Italia rules, abortion is not available due to a very high rate of conscientious objection by doctors, and the morning-after pill is selectively distributed,” he explains.

Giorgia Meloni’s program includes measures such as the burial of fetuses without the consent of the woman who aborts, or the obligation to listen to the heart of the fetus before aborting.

Obscurantism and macabre obsessions, the center-left parties respond. “Denying women their rights, their self-determination, their own emancipation, is not only a step backwards, but also a debacle of democracy,” says Rita Monticelli, councilor for the Democratic Party in Bologna. “On the left, when we talk about feminism, we’re not just talking about women, but about society as a whole. It’s about core values,” she assures.

Giorgia Meloni, whose motto is “God, Family, Country,” says she wants to give women the right not to have an abortion.
