Analyst: Prevent leaks almost impossible

The development of the next “Grand theft auto” is highly interesting, not only in the gaming industry. 2013’s “GTA 5” is the top-grossing entertainment product at $6 billion, and David Cole of US DFC believes the sequel – once released – will pull in even more money.

— It is the biggest project under development, not only in gaming, but in the entire entertainment industry. It is huge, he says.

Big suction

The developer Rockstar is spread out in several offices around the world with thousands of employees. The development of the sequel to “GTA 5” is estimated to have been going on for several years, and basically nothing has been said from the official side about the upcoming game. This means that the desire among players for new information is great.

— It’s almost impossible to control leaks, because everyone is crazy about what the next “Grand theft auto” will contain. And when many are looking for news, there will be leaks.

However, he downplays the danger to the game itself, at least as far as the images and videos are concerned, even if it likely disrupts the carefully directed marketing plan.

— The end product will probably be okay, it shouldn’t be such a big deal. But it comes from (the publisher and owner company) Take-Two that they want to block it immediately, he says.

Worrying about source code

However, it can be worse if the so-called source code is on the loose. According to The Guardian, it could provide additional clues about in-game content, and it could also theoretically mean that parts of the game could be made playable. The source code may also be valuable to competitors. The alleged hacker has stated that more material, including source code, may be released.

— If this is just the tip of the iceberg, it’s more worrying, says Cole and continues:

— We are talking about a multi-billion dollar project, so people will try to get their hands on different parts. The source code itself is very valuable, says Cole.

He expects a major tightening of security within Rockstar, with more regulation internally. As for the game itself, David Cole believes in a release in 2024 at the earliest, and that we will have to wait for official news – such as trailers and images.

“I don’t think there will be anything for a while, I would expect only next year, maybe in June,” he says.
