“The occurrence of three earthquakes of magnitude greater than 7 on September 19 is a coincidence. there is no scientific reason to explain or justify it,” the SSN said on social media.
Shaken by a tragic coincidence
The Mexicans were shaken again this Monday by a tragic coincidence. An earthquake of magnitude 7.7, with a death toll, shook the center of the country just as they commemorated two powerful earthquakes that left thousands dead in 1985 and 2017.
Less than an hour after an earthquake drill was carried out as part of the commemoration of the events that occurred on September 19, 1985 and 2017, a strong tremor unleashed panic in various sectors of the capital and other states in the center of the country. .
“One person died due to the fall of a wall in a shopping center in Manzanillo (Colima state),” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Twitter.
The National Seismological Service detailed that the phenomenon occurred at 13: 05 local (18:05 GMT), with an epicenter 59 km south of Coalcomán (state of Michoacán), on the Pacific coast. It had a depth of 15 km.
For its part, the Tsunami Warning Center of Mexico foresaw “anomalous variations in sea level, up to 82 cm above the tide level,” in the epicenter region.
“I thought I would have a heart attack! One by itself reaches nervous september“said Gabriela Ramírez, a 58-year-old housewife who lives in the Roma-Condesa sector, one of the most vulnerable in the capital because it is built on muddy terrain.
Occurrence of this type of phenomenon
The tremor triggered the seismic alert, which sounds a minute before occurrence of this type of phenomenoncausing massive evacuations in the capital, of 9.2 million inhabitants.
Some sectors of the city suffered power outages that affected a Metro line, reported Claudia Sheinbaum, at a press conference.
Meanwhile, Michoacán authorities reported one person injured by falling glass and minor damage to homes and a rural hospital.
The seismic alert sounded less than an hour after millions of people participated in a national drill, which takes place every September 19 to encourage prevention.
This is the third earthquake recorded September 19 in the history of Mexico (since records are kept) after the one that occurred in 1985, with a magnitude of 8.1 and which left more than 10,000 dead, the vast majority in the capital.
On the same date in 2017, another 7.1 earthquake hit the center of the country, with a balance of 369 deaths.
The tremor of this Monday occurred just nine minutes apart from that of 2017.
