President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev withdrew his candidacy from the election of a new head of the organization.
Speaking at a general meeting of members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Sergeev called the decision “forced”, saying that “the events of recent days” are forcing him to withdraw his candidacy. He also said that the elections are taking place under “unprecedented conditions” and that academics are “subjected to psychological and even external administrative pressure, especially after publicly declaring their position.”
News agency reports do not specify what recent events Sergeev was referring to or what cases of pressure he was talking about.
Academician Sergeev was nominated for the post of head of the academy by the Department of Physical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences. September 15 USA imposed sanctions against several institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences working in the field of physics, including the Institute of Applied Physics, which Sergeev headed before being elected President of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2017. Whether Sergeyev’s withdrawal of his candidacy is connected with the imposition of sanctions is unknown.
Club 1 July after the withdrawal of Sergeyev’s candidacy issued a statement about interference in the electoral process by “administrative bodies”, which excluded “two candidates who won the first two places in the elections five years ago” from the list of candidates. In addition to Sergeyev, we are talking about Academician Robert Nigmatullin, whose candidacy in 2022 did not approve government.
“The club believes that in the current situation, voting has de facto been turned into a farce, participation in which would be humiliating for members of the RAS,” the statement said.
