Mexico and a fatal coincidence

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit Mexico’s west coast on Monday, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Beyond the impact of the news causes commotion than the tremor occurred on the same day that the double anniversary of the earthquakes is commemorated that left thousands dead, one in 1985 and the other in 2017.

37 years ago, On September 19, 1985, an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 on the Richter scale shook Mexico. The epicenter took place almost 300 kilometers away from the capital of Michoacán, specifically in the Pacific coastal area. The areas most affected by that episode were the center, south and west of the Aztec territory, especially Mexico City. The exact number of dead, wounded and material damage was never known with precision. As for the deceased, there are only estimates: 3,192 was the official figure, while 20,000 was the data resulting from the calculations of some organizations. Meanwhile, the registry of the Coordinator of Victims estimated the death of 45 thousand people.

Alsosevere damage was reported to hundreds of buildings, many of which were totally destroyed and it is estimated that there was an economic loss that exceeded 4 million dollars.

Hours after that event, scientists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) reported that An aftershock was recorded on the night of September 20, 1985, which had a huge impact on the Mexican capital, where structures and buildings softened the day before ended collapsing.

The 2017 earthquake

On the same date, 32 years later, the inhabitants of Mexico once again feared an earthquake. On Tuesday, September 19, 2017, a new earthquake shook Mexico, at 1:14 p.m. (local time), as reported by the National Seismological Service (SSN).

telluric movement, of magnitude 7.1, had the epicenter 12 kilometers southeast of Axochiapan, Morelos; while the United States Geological Survey located it with an epicenter in San Felipe Ayutla, Puebla.

The balance left by the earthquake was 369 dead, of which 228 were from Mexico City, 74 from Morelos, 45 from Puebla, 15 from the State of Mexico, 6 from Guerrero and one from Oaxaca. Also, some estimates highlight that the economic loss was between four and eight thousand dollars.

This Monday’s is the third earthquake recorded on September 19 in the history of Mexico (since records are kept). The country registers intense seismic activity because it is located in the Pacific Ring of Firewhich unites America with Asia and where most of the earthquakes in the world occur.
