In the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, they called for referendums on “joining” Russia. With such a proposal on September 19, the public chambers of the two regions addressed the heads of the DPR and LPR Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik. On the recording, the head of the DPR proposed to “synchronize some actions” and unite the efforts of the authorities of the self-proclaimed republics in order “to work out those steps, the algorithm of actions that will allow us to start the issue of preparing for a referendum.”
The occupation administration of the Kherson region also stated that they want to hold a referendum on “joining” with Russia as soon as possible.. With such a statement spoke Kirill Stremousov, deputy head of the Russian-controlled administration of the Kherson region. According to him, residents of the occupied territories who are “afraid that Russia will leave” and who “want to be sure that they will not be left” are asking for a referendum.
The State Duma of the Russian Federation allowed that a referendum in the LPR could take place in the fall of 2022. About it reported State Duma deputy Victor Vodolatsky: “It will be autumn, but not late.” According to the deputy, the electoral system of the LPR is 100% ready for a referendum (he did not comment on the issue of a referendum in the DPR). In the public chambers of the DPR and LPR, the voting date was not announced. At the same time, in the chamber of the DPR declaredthat the vote could drag on for several days.
The Ukrainian authorities responded that Donetsk and Lugansk, like Crimea, are considered Ukrainian territory. There is a global consensus and international law. It is unequivocal: Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea are Ukraine.
