Russian President Vladimir Putin said goodbye to the first President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow. This was announced by Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov clarified that Putin stopped at the Central Clinical Hospital before flying to Kaliningrad. According to the press secretary, the president will not take part in Gorbachev’s funeral.

“We know that the farewell ceremony will take place on September 3, the funeral, but, unfortunately, the president’s work schedule will not allow him to do this on September 3, so he decided to do it today,” Peskov said (quote from Interfax).

Peskov also said that the president’s farewell ceremony would include “elements of a state funeral.”

“There will be elements of a state funeral in the sense that there will be a guard of honor. Farewell will be arranged. In this case, here the state will assist in organizing these funerals, ”Peskov said.

The presidential spokesman did not elaborate on how the status of the ceremony would differ from a formal state funeral.
