The points race was not immediately Robbe Ghys’ main goal, but he immediately grabbed a silver medal with it. No surprise for national coach Kenny De Ketele. “He really flew in training.”
“When he joined the group last Saturday and we saw him driving, Tim (Carswell, the second national coach) and I looked at each other with wide eyes. Robbe was very good.”
“In the first instance, he was not planned for the points race. Fabio Van Den Bossche would drive it. But due to Lindsay De Vylder’s unfortunate forfeit, we shifted the disciplines a bit. Robbe was our luxury substitute and that turned out great. We also knew that he was really looking forward to the points race.”
Ghys will also be in action on Tuesday in the team race, his main goal at this European Championship. “Of course, this performance gives a lot of confidence. Fabio also impresses in training.”
“In principle, we could take a medal every day at this European Championship. I don’t want to say that will happen. We stay with our feet on the ground, but it’s nice to be able to celebrate right away. This track really suits us. I said it before. It’s a short, technical track: ideal for our team.”
