During his morning conference at the National Palace, the president ruled out an upcoming meeting with Petro but expressed his satisfaction at his coming to power.

“Of course we are very happy because it is a historic change in Colombia,” he said.

He referred that conservatism has been very strong and harsh in Colombia and has prevented the required changes from taking place.

Lopez Obrador pointed out that in Colombia there are openly two parties, conservatives and liberals.

He pointed out that in all countries there are groups of oligarchs who are dedicated to stealing, have control of the media and promote smear campaigns.

He assured that the formula is to serve the people, preferably the poor, because with that social base the transforming government is defended, the government of change.

“If you don’t have that social base, you won’t resist,” he emphasized.

He said that the groups used to looting are “tremendous”, but it can be done if the old policy of thinking that nothing else has to be right with those above is left behind.

Since Petro won the second round of the elections in Colombia last June, López Obrador celebrated the consolidation of a “progressive bloc” in Latin America and has described this political transition as a “historic event.”

Petro took office yesterday as the first left-wing president in the contemporary history of Colombia in a ceremony attended by Mexico’s foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, and López Obrador’s wife, Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller.

The Mexican president now pointed out that Colombia had been “repressed” by the conservatism that prevented changes until the arrival of Petro, who he said will have a “very active and strong” opposition.

“It is until now that, with this change, there is hope that a new stage will begin in Colombia, with Petro. We are very happy, I hope things go well for him, he is going to have a very active, strong opposition, but he is a man with convictions, he has political experience”, he said.

In addition, López Obrador affirmed that Petro has the doors open to visit Mexico when he can, although he did not offer specific details about a formal invitation.

“He is invited (to Mexico) when he can come, the doors are open and we were very pleased that this change is taking place in Colombia and we congratulate the people of Colombia, brother people,” he said.

On several occasions, López Obrador has argued that America needs to form a bloc similar to the European Union, but with all the countries of the American continent, while proposing to eliminate organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS) to consolidate this new proposal. .
