UN nuclear agency warns that there is a risk of “nuclear disaster” in Zaporizhia

The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said on Saturday that he was alarmed by the bombings on Friday near the Ukrainian plant in Zaporizhia, the largest nuclear plant in Europe, occupied since March by Russian troops.

In a statement, the head of the UN nuclear agency said the attacks represent “the latest in a long series of increasingly alarming reports.”

He also stressed that there is a “very real risk of a nuclear disaster threatening public health and the environment in Ukraine” and beyond the country’s borders.

The operator of Ukrainian nuclear plants, Energoatom, said Friday’s shelling “severely damaged” a station with nitrogen and oxygen and an auxiliary building.
