Daniil Medvedev will tackle the US Open title defense as number one.

With the entry into the final of the ATP tournament in Los Cabos, the Russian confirmed his number 1 position on Friday. This was in danger in Mexico because he had been suspended from the major tournament in Wimbledon because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. After beating Miomir Kecmanovic (SRB) 7:6(0),6:1, he will face British Cameron Norrie in the fight for his first title of the season.

It is the fourth final of the season for Medvedev, he had lost the previous three at the Australian Open, in Hertogenbosch and Halle. Norrie prevailed in the second semi-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime 6:4.3:6.6:3.

The US Open starts on August 29th.

In Washington, only the quarter-finals were on the agenda. Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios showed good nerves against the American Frances Tiafoe when he fended off no fewer than five match points in the tie-break of the second set. The Australian won 6:7(5),7:6(12),6:2.
