Sparkasse: Attention customers! THIS popular service will soon be phased out
Online banking is used by customers of the savings bank More and more popular.
More than 60 percent and thus more than half of the adults in Germany now use the digital service of their bank and regulate their transactions via smartphone or computer. But soon a change is coming to the customers of the savings bank too, which has it all.
Sparkasse: This service will be discontinued by the end of the year
Of course, financial institutions such as Sparkasse attach great importance to security when it comes to online banking. So far, many customers have used the so-called SMS TAN procedure for a transfer. The bank sent a transaction number via SMS to the smartphone, which the customer had to confirm. This was to prevent fraudsters from being able to rip off money if they had obtained the customer’s password for the Sparkasse app.

As the savings bank confirmed to the “Handelsblatt”, the service should be over this year. From September 30, the banks could decide individually whether they want to continue using the process or turn it off. But the service was supposed to be shut down a few months ago.
Despite guaranteed security, there are major concerns about the security of the SMS tan process. “TANs sent by SMS can theoretically be intercepted by third parties. In addition, if the cell phone is stolen, there is the possibility that the TAN procedure can be used quite easily, ”explained the IT service provider Atruvia, with whom the bank works.
The reason for the delays are “certain special constellations” for some customers who are still dependent on the mobile TAN procedure. This should primarily affect users of smartphones from the Huawei brand. “To give banks more time to transition these customers, the shutdown has been pushed back to the end of September,” Atruvia said.
Sparkasse: SMS-TAN will soon be a thing of the past at these banks too
There are currently around 600,000 registered with Atruvia who use the SMS TAN procedure. At the end of last year there were said to be 1.7 million users.
But not only at the Sparkasse, also at the Volks- and Raiffeisenbanken, according to the “Handelsblatt”, the control via SMS-TAN will soon come to an end. In this way, the financial institutions are all pulling together to ensure the security of their bank customers in the future.

Instead of SMS-TAN, Sparkasse customers should conduct their banking transactions via the “VR Secure-Go plus” app. This should simplify online banking for smartphone users, because transfers, standing orders and the like can be controlled with an app and guarantee maximum security.
