Philippe Gilbert on fall in Burgos: "Riders are victims of UCI negligence"

The massive crash in the Tour of Burgos also sits high on Philippe Gilbert, who represents the riders in the UCI Athletes Commission. On his social media, he calls for action to be taken at last.

The crash in Tour of Burgos is already 2 days ago, but Philippe Gilbert finds the incident worrying enough to still react. “As the representative of the riders in the Athletes’ Commission of the (Cycling Union) UCI, I want to give all the riders who have fallen in Burgos a heart.”

“I defend the safety of the athletes and reject this contempt for the rules!”

“I have asked the UCI to draw up a protocol to thoroughly check and approve courses (in advance), especially the final kilometres. Unfortunately, this protocol is not yet in force…”

“Unfortunately, as always, the riders are the victims of this negligence. It is time to take the safety issue seriously. This must finally change.”
