How much does ‘Mapi’ cost? TVE reveals the price of its big bet for ‘access’

RTVE is in one of the biggest crises for years. That is why the directors of the public channel have been trying for some time to establish a format that is accepted in the ‘access prime time’. Spanish Television’s latest bet for this time slot has been ‘Mapi‘, a contest in which different celebrities face Mapi’s questions.

This new format premiered on August 1 as one of the season’s big bets. However, this space is not an original idea, since it is the adaptation of a Japanese program on the public channel of the Japanese country, called ‘Chiko’s Challenge’. In the version of our country, it is the actor and humorist Jandro López who is in charge of leading this particular contest.

Lopéz is not alone in this format, but is accompanied by Mapi, a smiling character who is a virtual girl created with CGI technology. The interdisciplinary artist Carla Pulpón is in charge of embodying this virtual doll that is becoming so viral on social networks. But in order to create Mapi, a technology is needed that may not be within the reach of any television program.

Popular Voice, through the RTVE Transparency Mailbox, has been able to find out how much the public entity pays for this innovative contest. And it is that Spanish Television signed a contract with the production company Mediacrest Entertainmente for a total of 60 programs. Each chapter has a cost of 73,000 eurosso the total cost of the set of programs would amount to 4,384,068 eurosamount to which VAT should be added.

As revealed by the aforementioned medium, not all of the RTVE Board was willing to buy ‘Mapi’, although a large majority of those present do support this proposal. At the meeting, which took place last March, eight members voted in favor, one abstained and one spoke against.

Despite the fact that this new contest has had a great impact on social networks, in which many months of Mapi have been held, the figures for the contest are not too high at first. In the first program it reached 8.2% of ‘share’, although in the following programs these data have dropped, without managing to reach 8% of the quota.
