Duisburg abolishes landmarks – residents angry! “nonsense action”
Duisburg. The temporary end for a landmark of the city Duisburg!
The high energy costs affect us all – including the city Duisburg. She is now taking a radical step and pulling the plug on a popular landmark.
Duisburg is taking a drastic step because of high electricity prices
As “Radio Duisburg” reports on its Facebook page, the Stadtwerketurm will remain dark from now on! With this, Stadtwerke Duisburg wants to set an example for saving energy. The lights also go out on the cooling tower and district heating storage at the thermal power station. That should bring savings of 100,000 kilowatt hours a year.
The Stadtwerke Tower is a 200 meter high chimney of Stadtwerke Duisburg AG in the Dellviertel district. Since 1999, the tower has been illuminated with green spotlights in the dark. So you can see the tower far beyond the city limits.
Duisburg: Many residents are angry, but some support the action
The striking building is one of the landmarks of the city. That is why many people are also sad and angry that the tower is being pulled out of the plug.
“A very sad sign is set there,” says one man. Another writes: “Take the last landmark in Duisburg for such a nonsense action”. This person’s comment is probably meant as a joke: “What a crap. Now I can’t find my way home when I’m drunk.”
This is the city of Duisburg:
- earliest written mention in 883
- fifth largest city in NRW, consists of seven districts, has around 496,000 inhabitants (as of December 2020)
- Duisburg port is the largest inland port in the world
- almost a third of the pig iron produced in Germany comes from the eight blast furnaces in Duisburg
- Sights include: Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord, Tiger & Turtle – Magic Mountain, Six Lakes Plateau
- Mayor is Sören Link (SPD)
Duisburg: action provides plenty of material for discussion
But there are also some who support the campaign: “I don’t think the idea is that bad. Setting an example can’t be bad these days” and “Very good. Setting a good example,” is the motto, among other things.
