UEFA will also apply semi-automatic offside technology in the Champions League

UEFA is thus following in the footsteps of World Football Association FIFA that has previously announced that it will use the offside system at the World Cup in Qatar.

The semi-automatic offside technology must make it possible, thanks to a chip in the ball, to observe the position of the players in relation to that ball. This should make it easier to detect offside without however replacing the judges’ judgement.

“This innovative system enables VAR teams to determine offside situations quickly and more accurately, improving game flow and consistency of decisions,” said UEFA referee Roberto Rosetti in a brief statement.

“The new system will work thanks to specialized cameras that can track 29 different body points per player. It is ready for use in official matches and will be implemented at every Champions League location.”
