They rescue a sailor who survived 16 hours trapped in an overturned sailboat in the Atlantic

A 62-year-old French man has survived for 16 hours in an air bubble inside the French sailing ship Jeanne Solo Sailor, dumped in the ocean Atlantic and rescued by two divers from the Spanish coastguard. “It has been a mission on the edge of the impossible”, recognized the protagonists of this surprising story when they came out of the water.

The sailboat Jeanne SoloSailor, 12 meters in length, left Lisbon on Sunday and sent a distress signal at 20:23 local time on Monday 14 miles from the islands of Sisargas (Galicia). Immediately, a rescue ship with five divers set sail from the Galician coast, but it was one of the three helicopters sent to help in the search that located the boat.

One of the divers entered the sailboat through the ship’s hull to search for signs of life and found a man inside, who responded to their call by banging on the hull from inside. In the attempt to get him out of there alive and in the face of the difficulties offered by the sea -too rough to attempt the rescue-, Spanish divers fixed buoyancy balloons to the hull to prevent it from sinking further and they waited for dawn to try to get the only crew member out of the Jeanne Solo Sailor.

Two divers swam under the ship in the morning to try to help the sailor out, who was in a neoprene survival suit knee-deep in water. The man, to be safe, voluntarily jumped into the icy water and swam under the boat to reach the surface.

“He left there with apnea”, recognized one of the Spanish divers, who added: “We had to pull him out because with the survival suit he was wearing, it was very difficult for him to get out.” From there, he was airlifted to safety in the helicopter. Helimer 402 and taken to the Alvedro airport, from where the ambulance evacuated him to a health center for medical follow-up. He was discharged shortly thereafter with no problems.
