A group of right-wing mayors came to La Moneda to deliver a letter to President Gabriel Boric, in which they propose 12 measures to combat the rise in crime affecting the country.

The activity was carried out by community leaders from the Metropolitan Region, including Evelyn Matthei, from Providencia; Daniela Peñaloza, from Las Condes; Isabel Valenzuela, from Colina; Camila Merino, from Vitacura; Rodolfo Carter, from Florida; Germán Codina, from Puente Alto, and José Manuel Palacios, from La Reina.

“We, our job is to be day by day in the territories, in the streets, with the neighbors and neighbors, we cannot allow Chileans to continue living in fear”, indicated Peñaloza, who assured that the delivery of the letter is “in a humble way and with a spirit of collaboration.”

“We are taking action, and we want to see that same action and concern, day by day, deployed by the Government”said the municipal authority of Las Condes.

For his part, Matthei charged that “There are several bills that are sleeping in Congress, regarding which no urgency has been placed, which have been left abandoned, and that we believe would be a great contribution in terms of security.”

The representative of Providencia alluded to the sayings of the former conventional Daniel Stingo, who affirmed that “the traps are on the highways, where the richest circulate.”

“I was sad and annoyed to hear a former conventionalist who spoke that this lockdown affected the rich (…) One sees that all the people of all the communes and all socioeconomic strata are suffering, and people are afraid”, the mayor said.

Regarding the request of the former Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Delgado, to establish a state of exception in the RM, Matthei warned that “it is a very extreme measure. What we want is that there are so many other things to start with. But it has not started for nothing, one does not see the Minister of the Interior in matters of security, she does not exist, and the Undersecretary (Eduardo Vergara) does not exist either”.

For his part, Rodolfo Carter pointed out that “if there is an issue that humiliates, affects and changes the lives of all Chileans, it is crime.”

“Are we going to lose our country, while the government is dedicated to campaigning for an option? We ask that in the time that you have left, which may not be much (…) you dedicate yourself to this fundamental issue, ”she stated.

Among the measures they propose, the following stand out: Penalize irregular entry into the country; real care of our borders with scanner for customs in all the entrances of the country, dictate the Arms Law regulation without further formality to have a ballistic DNA system and prohibit access to blank pistols that are modified; allow the use of special investigation techniques for organized crime that are established in the project that is in its second constitutional procedure in the Senate; apply urgency of immediate discussion the project that modifies Law 20,000 for an effective persecution of the patrimony of drug traffickers.

They also propose to modify the Constitutional Organic Law of Municipalities to give more powers to municipal guards, allowing the seizure to confront illegal trade and courses to carry non-lethal weapons; legislate against timber theft; reinstate the critical infrastructure bill in Congress; logistically reinforce the Carabineros in the South Macrozone; advancing in the bill that creates a statute of protection for police officers, among others.
