Nancy Pelosi could visit the border between the two Koreas

The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosiand its counterpart from South Korea, Kim Jin Pyopledged this Thursday to support efforts to maintain a strong deterrent against North Korea and achieve its denuclearization.

“Both sides expressed concern about the dire situation of the growing threat from North Korea,” a joint statement said. “We agree to support the efforts of the two governments to achieve practical denuclearization and peace through international cooperation and diplomatic dialogue, on the basis of strong and expanded deterrence against the North,” they added.

Pelosi arrived in South Korea late on Wednesday after a brief stop in Taiwan, something that greatly upset China. He also met with officials at the US embassy in Seoul earlier Thursday, ahead of talks with Kim and other lawmakers.

Later Thursday, Pelosi is scheduled to visit the Joint Security Zonenear the heavily fortified inter-Korean border, patrolled jointly by the Command of the UN led by the United States and North Korea, a South Korean official said, Reuters reported.

She would be the highest-level US official to visit the area after former President donald trumpwho met there with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2019. The south korean president, Yoon Suk-yeoldid not meet with Pelosi because of her scheduled vacation this week, but did have a 40-minute phone call with her.

South Korean media speculated that Yoon avoided meeting Pelosi in person to avoid alienating China after his visit to Taiwan sparked outrage from Beijing, which claims the self-ruled island as its own.
