Life was definitely not like the one Totó had seen in the movies. Giuseppe Tornatore became a household name in cinema at the age of 33 after premiering ‘Cinema paradiso’ and succeeding at Cannes, at the Oscars and in the collective imagination of the public. A life has passed and now, three and a half decades later, the director will revisit the passion for cinema and the friendship of Totó and Alfredo in an Italian television series.
I don’t want to hear from you anymore, I just want to hear about you
‘Cinema Paradiso’ is one of those movies recognized worldwide as a masterpiece. It is essential, of overwhelming beauty and with scenes as unforgettable as they are visually incredible. maybe that’s why no one has dared to revisit it in the form of a remakebeyond the alternative assemblies of Tornatore himself.
But for six episodes, ‘Paradiso’ will return to Giancaldothat little Sicilian town, and will tell us the same story again with an expanded story and new narrative threads, including, according to its producer, “the strength of a mother, the solidarity of a friend, sex as a tabooforced relocations, escapes and marked social differences”. In the meantime there will also be time for Totó to watch movies from the cabin, hopefully.
The series will be out in 2023 and it will be Tornatore himself who writes and directs it. As the project is, there are only two possibilities: either it is an absolute success and becomes one of the best series in recent years or it totally fails trying to repeat an unrepeatable work and it passes without pain or glory. Nothing happens: even if it’s not up to the level, no one will ever take ‘Cinema paradiso’ from us, one of the films that most reminds us why we love cinema.
