An in-depth analysis was carried out in the presentation of the “Information Dossier: Violence against Women in Chile 2021-2022” of the feminist organization. During the event, the winner of the National Prize for Literature, Diamela Eltit; the actress Natalia Valdebenito; the member of the coordination of the Chilean Network against Violence against Women, Isadora Castillo; and the journalist Juanita Rojas, met at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the archive from a feminist perspective.
The article accompanies the launch of the XVI version of the campaign “Careful! Machismo kills” and exposes 7 points: trafficking in women and girls, femicidal violence, violence in an intimate family context, sexual violence, the criminalization of self-defense against aggressors, access to decision-making spaces and the violence they must face and finally, job insecurity considering paid and unpaid work.
“It is a political reading of the moment we are living and also seeks to be a contribution to the understanding of the violence of those women and girls in Chile, based on the review of statistics from public and private institutions.. In addition to studies carried out by social organizations, a compilation of press archives and data collected by the Chilean Network itself,” Isadora Castillo introduced.
observations of feminism
The panelists analyzed in detail and commented on the facts of the daily life of the women who inhabit the national territory. Natalia Valdebenito explains: “Our participation grows, it is as if the macho and violent attack grew. The louder I speak, the stronger the threat. And my daily experience proves it to me, but also that dossier”.
Meanwhile, Diamela Eltit proposes dematernalization, referring to the deification or religiosity that is assigned to motherhood. “The task is not women against men, but to arrive at a democracy. Living democratically the bodies of men and women. This is not a war to the death, continuous and final, but it is about how this feminism that is a minority, that is not hegemonic, is in charge of taking over the others that are adverse to feminism.”
the feminist network
Since 1990, the Chilean Network against Women has worked together with groups, social organizations, and non-governmental organizations to help eradicate violence against women and girls.
“Observing the 16 years of the Red Chilena campaign shows us a lot of these changes that have taken place. If we see this first poster: Be careful, machismo kills. And then how femicide and sexual violence become visible, and other connections begin to be generated with forms of violence that are perhaps less explicit, that are of a symbolic nature”, conceives the coordinator of the feminist articulation.
The virtual and face-to-face conference included interpretation in Chilean sign language. It was also broadcast live by Radio Universidad de Chile through the signal 102.5 FM and live signal. Likewise, through Facebook of the Chilean Network against Violence against Women and Radio UCh.
