Argentina detected five irregular flights to Malvinas from Chile

The Ministry of Defense detected five unauthorized flights headed from Chile to the Malvinas Islands. The event, which was described by Tierra del Fuego as “extremely serious”would entail a violation of Argentine airspace and could lead to a diplomatic complaint that is being analyzed.

Irregular flights to the archipelago usurped by Great Britain date between July 27 and 30 and were detected by the Merlo Aerospace Command, using the RPA-170M tactical radar installed in Tierra del Fuego.

As reported, they did not have a flight plan or an Argentine airspace permit or an official communication with the national control agencies.

Given the versions on which there are still confirmations, the governor of Tierra del Fuego and the South Atlantic islands, Gustavo Melellawarned about the “extreme seriousness” of the incident and confirmed that the provincial government activated “all the protocols that this type of action deserves” to see if the information is true.

If confirmed, he added, his administration will require “act with the greatest firmness and forcefulness” for what for that “our Armed Forces fully and efficiently guarantee compliance with the purposes pursued by our National Defense Law.

The Ministry of Defense reported the fact to the Foreign Ministrywhose officials analyze which is the diplomatic path to follow before the government of Gabriel Boric.

History of complaints with Chile and Brazil

It is not the first time that Argentina detects irregular flights towards the islands over which the national government ratified its sovereignty claim before the highest level British authorities.

During the two governments of the rightist Sebastian Pinera (2010-2014 and 2018-2022), Argentina had filed complaints about possible logistical support for British military flights.

The same thing happened last February with Brazilwhen a protest was raised against the government of Jair Bolsonaro for allowing the use of airports in his country for British aircraft flying to the islands.

Faced with the possibility of such events being repeated, Melella asked “to continue with the process of re-equipping and modernizing our military capabilitiesstarted with the installation of radars in the northern zone of Río Grande, so that our Armed Forces can fully and efficiently guarantee compliance with the goals pursued by our National Defense Law”.

That the pertinent alerts are activated

The only airline that has authorized flights to Malvinas is Latamwhich departs from the capital Santiago and stops in Punta Arenas and lands in Puerto Argentino, land of the islands.

These flights take place four times per month since last June, after being canceled due to air restrictions resulting from the pandemic.

“It is essential in the 21st century, and even more so in a region like ours where geopolitical interests of various powers come together, and given the events that are taking place in different parts of the world” that the relevant alerts are activatedhe added.

For now, the Fuegian government “has immediately activated all the protocols that this type of action deserves” and communicated with “the pertinent national organizations in order to request more information in order to ratify or totally or partially rectify” the existence of these irregular flights.
