At about the same time that Pelosi’s plane was losing altitude and approaching Songshan airport -located northeast of the capital Taipei-, an unknown number of Su-35 fighters were crossing the Taiwan Strait, according to Chinese state media. How far they went and whether they actually flew for many miles over Taiwanese airspace is unknown.
Despite flying for the People’s Liberation Army, the Sukhoi Su-35 is a Russian aircraft model of which China currently has 24 units. This aircraft, based on the platform of the highly proven Su-27 Flanker-D, took flight for the first time in 2008 and is one of the latest additions from China that received the batch in 2019 after contributing 2,500 million dollars.
It’s one of the most capable fighter-bombers within the Chinese ranks and it has better technology than its direct ancestors and than the vast majority of aircraft that are manufactured in the eastern giant.
The Su-35 has a range of 1,600 kilometers and a maximum altitude of 18,000 meters. Its pair of engines signed by the Russian Saturn with afterburner manage to propel it to 2,400 kilometers per hour thanks to its weight content of 34.5 tons.
In the armament section, in addition to the 30-millimeter cannon, it has a wide variety of compatible missiles and bombs that can be attached to its 12 anchors, both internal and external. In total, it can carry up to 8 tons of weapons.
The ammunition card is made up of air-to-ground rockets, air-to-air missiles with ranges of more than 300 kilometers with guidance systems and missiles prepared for electronic warfare. The latter are capable of leaving systems as elementary as the radars of enemy planes out of play.
It also has camera-guided, laser-guided and satellite-guided bombs. The Su-35 is currently operational in Russia and China, the latter being the first country to launch exports of the aircraft. It is also known that Egypt requested a total of 24 units in 2021 and some reports have indicated Algeria’s interest in obtaining another lot.
