Copred announces investigation after complaints of racism in Sonora Grill restaurant

In social networks, Employees of the Sonora Grill Prime restaurant reported that diners were allegedly divided according to their skin color. While the company has denied the accusations, the Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination of Mexico City (Copred) announced an investigation.

The initial complaint was made anonymously through the Twitter account Horror Restaurants MXwhere employees often report bad labor practices, as well as cases of labor abuse and discrimination.

According to the complaint, at the Sonora Grill branch located in Polanco, customers are divided into two zones according to their skin color.

“At Sonora Grill Prime Masaryk the restaurant is divided into two sections. They call him Gandi and Mousset. In Gandi they seat people who are not Caucasian, even the director of the brand named Juan Manuel Moreira, who gets very upset if they seat someone who looks poor or gives the restaurant a bad image, according to him. In Mousset pure Caucasian people and the treatment is completely different”, reads the complaint.

Shortly after, Copred announced that it would carry out an investigation into the possible “denounced racist conduct.” The institution affirmed that it will adhere to the Law to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination of Mexico City.

The fifth article of this law states that exclusion and distinction based on ethnic origin, skin tone or physical appearance is prohibited.

For its part, Sonora Grill Group denied the accusations against him. Through a statement, the company pointed out that respect and inclusion prevail in its organization.

“At Sonora Grill Group we strongly deny any racist or discriminatory practice,” the statement said.
