Chinese Foreign Ministry: Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is a serious violation of One China policy

2 Aug 2022 6:39 p.m

China has reacted to Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. China’s Foreign Ministry said it would “take all necessary measures to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the visit of the US House Speaker”. RT DE reproduces the statement verbatim.

China’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday released a statement regarding the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to China’s Taiwan region:

“On August 2, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the Chinese region of Taiwan, ignoring strong opposition and strong statements by China. This is a serious violation of the One China principle and the provisions of the US three joint statements and China’s. It has serious repercussions on the political foundations of China-US relations and constitutes a serious violation of China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity separatist forces for ‘Taiwan independence.’ China firmly opposes and clearly condemns this, and has made serious demarches and harsh protests to the United States government.

There is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government representing all of China. This was recognized by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 in 1971. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, 181 countries have established diplomatic relations with China based on the One China Principle. The one China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a fundamental norm in international relations.

In 1979, in the Joint US-China Declaration on Establishing Diplomatic Relations, the United States committed:

‘The United States of America recognizes the government of the People’s Republic of China as the only legal government of China. In this regard, the people of the United States will maintain cultural, commercial and other informal relations with the people of Taiwan.’

Congress, as part of the US government, has a fundamental obligation to strictly follow the US government’s one-China policy and to refrain from any official exchanges with the Chinese region of Taiwan. China opposes all visits to Taiwan by members of the US Congress, and the US Executive Branch has a responsibility to ban such visits. Since Speaker Pelosi is the acting head of the US Congress, her visit and activities in Taiwan, in whatever form and for whatever reason, are a major political provocation to increase US-Taiwan official exchanges. China absolutely does not accept this, and the Chinese people absolutely reject this.

China warns of possible Pelosi visit to Taiwan

The Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive issue right at the heart of China-US relations. Strait Taiwan is facing a new round of tensions and serious challenges, and the precipitating reason is repeated efforts by Taiwanese authorities and the United States to change the status quo. Taiwan authorities have sought US support for their independence agenda. Refusing to accept the 1992 consensus, they are flexing their energies to promote ‘de-Sininization’ and support ‘gradual independence’. For its part, the United States has tried to use Taiwan to encircle China. They distort, cloak, and hollow out the One China principle, increase their official exchanges with Taiwan, and encourage ‘Taiwanese Independence’ separatist activities. These steps are extremely dangerous, like playing with fire. Those who play with fire will perish in it.

The position of the Chinese government and people on the Taiwan issue has not changed. It is the firm resolve of more than 1.4 billion Chinese to resolutely guard state sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is the common goal and sacred responsibility of all Chinese sons and daughters to achieve full reunification with the motherland. The will of the people cannot be defied and the passage of time cannot be reversed. No country, power or individual should ever underestimate the firm determination, strong will and great ability of the Chinese government and people to defend state sovereignty and territorial integrity and achieve national reunification and rejuvenation.

China will definitely take all necessary measures to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the visit of the US House Speaker. Any consequences of this must be borne by the side of the US and the separatist forces of ‘Taiwan Independence’.

China and the USA are two large countries. The right way for them to deal with each other is through mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, non-confrontation and cooperation for mutual benefit.

The Taiwan issue is a purely internal matter for China, and no other country has the right to pose as a judge on the Taiwan issue.

Could Pelosi's visit to Taiwan spark a US-China war?

China is urging the United States to stop playing the ‘Taiwan card’ and using Taiwan to contain China. They should stop meddling in Taiwan and interfering in China’s internal affairs. They should stop supporting and collaborating with the separatist forces of ‘Taiwan Independence’ in any way. They should stop twisting, cloaking and hollowing out the one China principle. They must take credible actions, strictly observing only the One China principle and implementing the provisions of the three joint declarations by China and the United States, the ‘five nos’ pledged by the US leadership and no longer the false and dangerous one path to follow.”

Note the editorial staff:

The “five nos” are:

  • are not aiming for a “new Cold War”.
  • don’t try to change China’s system
  • do not revive alliances against China
  • do not support ‘Taiwan independence’
  • do not seek conflict with China.
