The resignation of Sebastian Vettel from the formula 1 should have raised high hopes for Nico Hülkenberg. But they were destroyed in one fell swoop.

As a reserve driver, he was considered the top favorite to succeed Vettel at Aston Martin. But the team decided against him. Is the dream of coming back in the formula 1 finally burst?

Formula 1: Does Nico Hulkenberg end now?

Since Nico Hülkenberg lost his cockpit at Renault to Esteban Ocon in 2020, the German has been fighting for a new place in the premier motorsport class. So far in vain. He never got beyond the post of substitute driver. After Vettel’s resignation announcement, hopes were back again.

Hulkenberg was considered the top favorite to succeed his compatriot. Logically, after all, as a reserve driver, he knows the racing team well, has the necessary experience and proved in his four “subs” that he is still a good driver.

Aston Martin has decided: Alonso instead of Hulkenberg

But now it is clear: He will not inherit Vettel, but Fernando Alonso (more here). For Hülkenberg, that should feel like a slap in the face. Was it the last chance for a cockpit in Formula 1?

Now 34 years old and two years without a regular place, the chances of the 181-times GP driver are dwindling. A chance at Renault’s successor Alpine is extremely unlikely. There super talent Oscar Piastri will take over the seat from Alonso.

Next replacement? career end?

And in the other Formula 1 racing teams there is hardly a free cockpit that the Emmericher would have a realistic chance of.

It is unclear whether Nico Hülkenberg will continue to be satisfied with a place as a reservist. It cannot be ruled out that after the low blow at Aston Martin he will throw down the rocks and also end his career.
