Elise Mertens and Greet Minnen both die in 1st round of tournament in Washington

Elise Mertens and Greet Minnen were unable to qualify for the 2nd round of the WTA tournament in Washington. Mertens was surprised by the Russian Samsonova, Minnen bit into the sand against the Estonian Kanepi.

Elise Mertens and Lyudmila Samsonova, the number 60 in the world, faced each other for the first time. Both players kept balance in set 1 after 2 early breaks.

After another break, Mertens reached out to win the set with a 5-3 lead, but Samsonova turned out to be a tough nut to crack and answered with a rebreak.

In the 12th game, the Russian then had 3 set points on Mertens’ service, who still forced a tiebreak. In it, Samsonova still took the 1st set.

In set 2, the Russian had enough of a smooth service break to finally pull the sheet. Mertens made her opponent doubt for a while when she was allowed to serve for the match, but Samsonova polished away 2 break points and then cashed in her 1st match point.

Also Greet Minnen immediately out

Besides Elise Mertens, Greet Minnen also failed to qualify for the next round in Washington. Minnen faced the experienced Estonian Kaia Kanepi in the 1st round, the 6th seed.

Kanepi steamed to a 5-1 lead in the 1st set with two service breaks. Minnen struggled for a while, but Kanepi quickly won the set 6-3.

The Estonian also had the upper hand in the 2nd set and put Minnen with his back against the wall with a break at 3-3. Minn flirted with a rebreak, but could not use her 3 break points in the 8th game.

Our compatriot then had to serve to stay in the match, which didn’t work out. Kanepi took the win on Minnen’s service, although she still needed 4 match points.
