The Uzbek authorities have unblocked access to the social networks VKontakte, Twitter and WeChat.

The Agency for Information and Mass Communications of Uzbekistan explained this decision by saying that “blockages only harm development.” They noted that they are now continuing negotiations with TikTok regarding the unblocking of this platform.

Press Secretary of the President of Uzbekistan Sherzod Asadov welcomed the decision of the regulator and stressed that “attempts to isolate the information space and prevent pluralism of opinions do not serve the progress of society, but rather hold it back.”

The largest social networks were blocked in Uzbekistan in the summer of 2021. Country authorities justified this decision is that social networks violate the requirements of the legislation on the protection of personal data – in particular, they store them on servers abroad.
