Pop singer Cody Simpson wins swimming gold for Australia at the Commonwealth Games

Music lovers may know Cody Simpson from songs like “All day” or “iyiyi” (along with Flo Rida). At 14, he was discovered on YouTube, where he had put on covers of the likes of Justin Timberlake and Jason Mraz.

But despite his musical success and his status as a glamor boy (he had relationships with Gigi Hadid and Miley Cyrus, among others), his heart continued to beat for his old love: swimming.

Perhaps it was at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where he sang and played for the British Queen, that the spark flew again. A year later, he joined a swim club in Los Angeles and immediately made it clear that he meant business. The Paris Games are Simpson’s big goal.

But he could harvest earlier. The 25-year-old Simpson specializes in the butterfly and freestyle. At the Australian Championships he performed so well that the national coach could no longer ignore him.

Simpson was selected for the 4x100m freestyle relay team for the Commonwealth Games. Although he only swam in the heats, he did receive a gold medal as a member of the winning team.

“I’m incredibly grateful to have been a part of this, even if it was a very small part,” Simpson wrote to his nearly 5 million followers on Instagram.
