Baden-Württemberg Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) warns against a “too one-sided view” of Russia’s role in the Ukraine conflict. US interventions would have brought “a lot of destruction instead of peace and democracy”.
According to a “thesis paper on the war” that German press agency (dpa) is available, the Baden-Württemberg Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) warns against a “too one-sided view of the role of Russia and the West”. the dpa Hermann quotes from the paper:
“The military conflicts and participation in wars of the past 30 years do not justify the image that only Russia, ‘belligerent’ and ‘evil’, repeatedly asserted its interests with military force.”
In an interview with the Stuttgart newspaper the politician points out that he “thinks differently about war than Baerbock and Habeck”. The thesis paper goes on to say:
“In particular, the US interventions brought a lot of destruction instead of peace and democracy.”
In the letter, the Greens politician goes on to say that in his opinion, since the end of the Soviet Union, Russia has also waged “brutal, illegal wars with proven war crimes in the supposed Russian zones of interest, such as Chechnya, Georgia, Syria,” said Hermann.
Referring to the military role of the United States in the early 1990s, the dpaArticle Hermann with the accusation that the USA, “supported by individual NATO states such as France, Great Britain and Germany, with concentrated military force and sometimes also in violation of international law twice in the same period in Iraq, in Yugoslavia, Kosovo, in Afghanistan etc.” would have intervened.
After the end of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, “opportunities for peace” and a new “security architecture with arms control and disarmament, which would also have taken into account the interests of the former Soviet states and Russia” were wasted in favor of an eastward expansion of NATO.
In an interview with the Stuttgart newspaper (payment barrier) Hermann appeals against “further German arms deliveries to the Ukraine and calls for diplomatic initiatives”. His summary of the status quo is:
“In the end, the peace treaty must also be concluded with the war enemy Russia, no matter what war crimes it has committed. That is the bitter, inescapable truth.”
The Baden-Württemberg FDP parliamentary group leader Hans-Ulrich Rülke is according to Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) “appalled” at Hermann’s assessments and is quoted as saying:
“I’m appalled by the recent statements by hobby foreign politician Winfried Hermann, who outed himself as an understander of Putin.”
He therefore demands “immediate intervention” from the incumbent Minister President Kretschmann (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen). It damages the reputation of the state of Baden-Württemberg massively “if a member of the state government relativizes Putin’s criminal war of aggression,” according to Rülke SZ.
