Google Photos: new video editing tools are coming to Chromebooks first

In the coming months, Google Photos users will be able to combine their photos and videos with music and credits to make little clips. Chromebook users will get access to the new video editor before anyone else, Google announced last week.

The web giant also introduced new default apps for Chrome, as well as updates for existing apps. All designed to increase user productivity.

New Chromebook features are coming just before back-to-school season — an important time of year for Chromebook sales. It’s also a necessity for Google because those entry-level laptops need a boost. Why ? Because this year, customers have shown more interest in high-end PCs. Chromebook shipments from HP and Lenovo have plunged since mid-2021.

Create movies from scratch

With the video editing tool, users will be able to create movies from scratch, choosing which videos and photos to include. They can also select one of the proposed themes, as well as the people (or pets) to stage, and let Google take care of the rest. According to Google, the tool will be able to “intelligently” choose the most significant sequences in long videos.

Google also plans to add the LumaFusion app to Chromebooks for professional-grade video editing. This multi-track video editing tool allows adding graphic effects, visual effects, transitions and distortions, audio tracks and sound effects, narration, color grading, and more.

As for productivity improvements, Google is adding new PDF editing features to Gallery, Chomebook’s default media app, this week. A new app, Cursive, comes preinstalled to capture, edit, and organize handwritten notes on Chromebooks with a stylus. You can then copy and paste your notes into another application or send them as PDFs. The Screencast application, also pre-installed, allows you to record, view and share videos and transcribed presentations.
