Summer is in full swing and finally we have plenty of sunshine. When using it, remember to apply specific products with sunscreen to the skin. This is very important, because apart from the good influence of sunlight on our well-being and health, the risk of burns and more serious consequences is very high. You can reach for ready-made cosmetics with UV filters, but you can also use an alternative, i.e. natural oils, which also protect the skin from the sun.
The skin needs protection from the sun
We love warm rays, we also like a beautiful summer tan. In addition, thanks to exposure to the sun’s rays, our skin is able to produce vitamin D, deficiencies of which affect many Poles. And just 15 minutes in the sun is enough for the body to produce this vitamin. It affects, among others to strengthen immunity, the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, and also improves well-being. Despite these advantages, using the sun without skin protection is harmful, which must be kept in mind all the time. Solar radiation can cause erythema and burns, damage collagen fibers, thus accelerating skin aging. Not to mention, too much sun can lead to skin cancer. That is why it is important to choose the right sun protection, guided by the level of skin protection SPF (Sun Protection Factor). SPF indicates how long you can stay in the sun with skin protected with a suitable cosmetic.
There are several degrees of protection:
- weak – SPF 2-6,
- medium – SPF 8-12,
- high – SPF 15-25,
- very high – SPF 30-50,
- ultra-high – SPF over 50.
Eight natural oils with UV filters
To protect your skin from the sun, you can use cosmetics with UV filters available in various drugstores or pharmacies. Additionally, you can use natural oils that support protection against harmful solar radiation to a different extent.
Raspberry seed oil
Cold-pressed raspberry seed oil is one of the most frequently chosen oils with UV filters. According to research, the SPF index can range from 28 to 50 (the index has not been precisely defined). Moreover, it contains essential fatty acids (omega-6, omega-3), vitamin E and vitamin A. It also contains antioxidants (tocopherols, carotenoids, flavonoids).
Wild carrot seed oil
It also contains a high SPF (38-40), perfectly moisturizes the skin, rejuvenates, regenerates and soothes any sunburn.
Wheat germ oil
It has SPF 20, is a source of unsaturated fatty acids and has the highest vitamin E content among all vegetable oils. As a result, it perfectly protects the epidermis against water loss and slows down the aging process of the skin.
Olive oil has an SPF 8, it is also a source of healthy fatty acids, vitamins A, B, E and K. It has anti-inflammatory properties, moisturizes and nourishes the skin very well. Firms it and prevents wrinkles.
Macadamia nut oil
It has SPF 6, also contains omega fatty acids, lecithin, vitamins A, E and B vitamins. It protects, moisturizes, soothes and smoothes the skin.
Sweet almond oil
Sweet almond oil has an SPF 5. It also contains proteins, fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E, which protect the skin and improve its condition.
Has 4 SPF. In addition, it contains powerful antioxidants, B vitamins, vitamins A and E, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. As a result, it nourishes, regenerates and protects the skin against damage, and improves its color.
It has SPF 2-4, besides it is a source of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids important for the skin, B vitamins, vitamins C and E. It also contains potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc.
Despite their advantages, natural oils used on their own in strong sun are not enough. Although they contain natural UV filters, they will not provide the skin with complete safety. Even products with the highest SPF cannot provide 100% sun protection. When outdoors in intense sunlight, oils can naturally enhance the effects of mineral or chemical filters applied to the skin. In addition, moderation and reasonable use of the sun are important, especially between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., when it is the strongest.
