Bochum: Bathing area on the Ruhr just opened – swimming is already forbidden again!

Bochum. Short-term dampener of bathing euphoria!

It was not until Thursday (June 30th) that Mayor Thomas Eiskirch had the 200-meter-long bathing area on the Ruhr in Bochum-Dahlhausen opened. But on the following sunny weekend, swimming is in Bochum immediately banned. At least for now.

Bochum: Bathing area on the Ruhr was only recently opened

The 200 meter long bathing area extends about 20 meters into the Ruhr and is intended to invite the people of Bochum to swim and splash around for free. However, the city gives an important hint: “Since the Ruhr is a natural body of water, the water quality can fluctuate.” You can therefore always find out about the current bathing status on the Internet.

And on the weekend of all things (as of Saturday, July 2nd) you can clearly read there: “Bathing is forbidden”! But why do you miss the bathing fun again so quickly? The reason is the storm and heavy rain on Thursday evening (June 30). Due to the precipitation, the early warning system at the bathing area went off immediately.

Bochum: Bathing area closed after a storm

The city of Bochum explains: “The early warning system checks every hour whether a daily precipitation total of three millimeters has been exceeded at at least three radar stations, or whether a daily precipitation total of five millimeters has been exceeded at the Steele measuring station. In these cases, the hygienic limit parameters E.coli and enterococci can be expected to be exceeded and bathing is prohibited.”

The big question is: When can you swim in the Ruhr again in Dahlhausen? The city says: “The bathing ban can only be lifted again when the water situation has improved again and meets the requirements of the EU directive. To determine this, a control measurement is carried out within a period defined by the early warning system.”

The city has not said exactly how long this period will last. What is certain, however, is that around 48 hours pass between the measurement and the result. (at)
