On Thursday morning, the Sejm rejected the citizens’ bill easing abortion regulations. 265 deputies voted against the bill, 175 were against and four abstained. The proposed provisions assumed, inter alia, the right to terminate a pregnancy up to the 12th week.

The votes of PiS deputies were decisive

225 Law and Justice MPs voted for the rejection. During the voting, shouts of “for life” could be heard from the benches occupied by the ruling camp. One person in the PiS club voted against the rejection. This is MP Monika Pawłowska, who was previously a member of the Agreement and also a member of the Left.

Joanna Fabisiak from the Civic Coalition, 19 members of the Polish Coalition, 10 members of the Confederation, 2 MPs from Poland 2050, 4 MPs from the Agreement, two MPs from Kukiz ’15, Zbigniew Girzyński from the Polish Affairs club and Łukasz Mejza, an independent MP, also voted for the rejection.

Also against the rejection of the bill at first reading were 120 members of the KO, 44 members of the Left, 6 members of Poland 2050 and 3 members of the Polish Socialist Party.

The Stormy Debate on Abortion

The first reading of the civic draft liberalization of the abortion law, proposed by the committee “Legal abortion. No compromises”, began on Wednesday, before noon. 23. The stormy discussion ended after two hours. The main assumption of the project was, among others the right to terminate the pregnancy up to the 12th week, and after that date – when the pregnancy poses a threat to the life or physical or mental health of a woman, when the results of prenatal diagnosis or other medical indications indicate that there are developmental or genetic abnormalities of the fetus, and when the pregnancy is a consequence of a prohibited act that is the subject of a pregnant person’s declaration. The project also assumed that the termination of pregnancy would be reimbursed by the National Health Fund.
