The automobile industry has before it two technologies on which to build its future: electricity and hydrogen. Fortunately, research in both fields is promising and the industry is in good hands. The future is fast… and light.

The British company Viritech has shown the world its Apricale car, designed by Pininfarina, and has given the technical data of the vehicle, which makes the car an impressive speed machine.

This hydrogen car will overcome the barriers of 1,000 horsepower with a weight of less than 1,000 kg. That is, it will have more than one CV of power per kilogram of weight. A real madness, something that shows the advantages of hydrogen over electric.

A weight of less than 1,000 kg makes the Apricale one of the lightest cars in the thousand horsepower club, and is an impressive demonstration of the company’s core technology: “Graph-Pro” lightweight hydrogen storage tanks. Do you know everything about hydrogen cars?

These are integrated into the carbon fiber chassis structure, rather than heavy bolt-on tanks that weigh 20 times more than the hydrogen they carry.

The Apricale carries about 5.4 kg of hydrogen at 700 bar pressure. This hydrogen is passed through a “several hundred kilowatt” fuel cell to produce electricity, which is sent directly to two 536bhp electric motors at the front and rear axles.

Or it’s diverted to charge a 6 kWh high-performance battery. The battery is there to provide short-term boost power when those thousand horsepower is needed.

So while it’s correct to say that this car can deliver 1,000bhp, it’s also correct to say that it’s for a very short time: a maximum of 27 seconds, according to News Atlas calculations.

Viritech promises emission-free driving at speeds of up to 322 km/h, and says that a full tank of hydrogen will reach 560 km. before you have to look for a hydrogen station

The downside is that only 25 of these cars will be built, with deliveries expected from 2024. In the meantime, take a look at the 100% solar car launched in the Netherlands and named after the recently released Disney movie: Lightyear 0.
