A man wounded four people Thursday in a knife attack that was stopped by bystanders, who knocked the assailant down, in a neighborhood in the New Zealand city of Auckland, police said.

The attack was random and the suspect was arrested, explained Naila Hassan, chief of the district police, who indicated that there was no indication that it was a hate crime since the victims were of different genders, ethnicities and ages.

“This was an extremely fast-paced incident in which our law enforcement personnel responded quickly, apprehended the assailant and prevented further damage to our communities”he added.

All of the victims suffered moderate injuries, he said.

People in the neighborhood began to follow and surround the man when the attack began and one person knocked him down using a walking stick, Hassan said.

“Citizens acted with extreme courage”he claimed.

According to the police official, the assailant was carrying a large knife and suffered moderate injuries when he was arrested, for which he was hospitalized.

The incident in the suburb of Murrays Bay lasted less than 10 minutes, he added.

In 2021, two knife attacks occurred in supermarkets in New Zealand. One was considered a terrorist act, while in the other a judge could not find a motive.

In September, a Muslim extremist inspired by the Islamic State group stabbed five people in an Auckland supermarket before he was shot dead by police. Three of the victims were seriously injured, and two other people were also injured, but all survived.

And in May, customers and staff at a Dunedin supermarket managed to stop a frenzied man from hurting more people after he stabbed four, seriously injuring three of them. The assailant, 43-year-old Luke Lambert, was convicted of four counts of attempted murder and sentenced to 13 years in prison.
