Javier Lambán has been left alone in his account of how Aragón spoiled Spain’s Olympic bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics. José Manuel Franco, president of the Higher Sports Council, he was the last to speak and make it clear that the socialist leader is to blame that things did not go as expected.
«There are phrases that are disqualified, such as calling the COE an ally of independence. I have heard many barbarities throughout my life, but this one may surpass some of the ones I have heard before. Right now we are still digesting the disappointment because it would have been a magnificent joint candidacy”, said the head of Spanish sports and who shares a political party with Lambán.
The president of the CSD was also clear when commenting on the words of the president of Aragon, who asked Pau Gasol to inform himself “better”, after his support for the COE’s decision. “You have to digest it, but what we cannot do is speak in those terms of an exemplary athlete, on the track and off the basketball court. These are words that a figure like Pau Gasol, an icon of Spanish sport, does not deserve,” he pointed out.
Also, Franco praised the work of the Spanish Olympic Committee, acknowledging the effort and the “dose of patience” to try to advance the candidacy. “It has not been possible, but this is not the time to blame, let’s think about the future and see if it is possible for 2034,” he settled.
Asked about the possible candidacies of Aragon and Catalonia separately, Franco explained that “the most powerful” is to go together. «I do not think it is appropriate that two candidacies from two autonomous communities can be presented. Nor that it is good to obtain the success that we all seek, which is to organize the Winter Games in Spain », he settled.
