At the streaming service Disney+ come Marvel-Fans currently fully at their expense. Since June 8, the platform has been broadcasting the next superhero series: “Ms. Marvel”.

And it’s quite something! Because: In the series, they dare Marvel Studios something that has never happened before in any other TV production. Disney+ creates a real sensation!

Disney+: Marvel equates hijab with superpowers

In the new series “Ms. Marvel,” Disney+ provides a stage for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first female Muslim superhero. As if that weren’t legendary enough, the creators are already taking a bold step in the second episode.

+++ Warning, spoilers for episode 2 of “Ms. Marvel! +++

During a confidential chat with her best friend Nakia in the school bathroom, protagonist Kamala Khan (aka ‘Ms. Marvel’) laments that everything in her life is changing so rapidly. While Nakia thinks Kamala is talking about growing up, the girl really means her new life with super powers.

However, Nakia, who wears a hijab in both the Marvel comics and the show, recognizes herself in her friend’s words in her own way. “All my life I’ve been either too white for one or too ethnic for the other, and it was a very awkward, jarring in-between.” When I first put on my hijab I was hoping to shut up some people, but I’ve realized that I don’t have to prove anything to anyone. When I put it on I feel like myself – like I have a purpose,” she confides in Kamala.

A clear statement by the series creators, which is intended to do away with the image of the hijab, which is usually negatively associated in the western world, once and for all. The girls’ conversation equates Nakia’s hijab with Kamala’s superpowers.

A sensation in the Marvel series: the actress praises Disney+ for bold implementation

Unfortunately, it is still a rarity in Hollywood that Muslim characters are offered so much airtime. But in 2022, Marvel Studios seems to have realized that it was high time for a superheroine that didn’t correspond to the western type. This scene was also an affair of the heart for the actresses.

“Kamala” actress Iman Vellani emphasizes in the “Refinery29” interview: “To see that she has such a healthy relationship with her family and her culture is really refreshing. Mainly because in Hollywood I often only see young Muslims on screen when they try to break away from their culture, their religion or their parents. It’s something that keeps her from finding her true self. But in this case, we see her using that as motivation and as a moral code. I think that’s wonderful.”

Iman himself is half Canadian and half Pakistani and can identify with the problems described by “Nakia” very well. And so it will certainly happen to some viewers of the series.

Diversity is not the only focus for the Disney+ streaming service. The films of the Walt Disney Company also break with outdated role models – but apparently not everyone is ready for this change: THIS film even ends up on the index.
