Vienna – Wednesday, June 22, 2022, 1:53 p.m
SK Rapid has announced that it will play an international test match on July 9th – this has been a tradition for the Greens and Whites for years.
So far, however, the Viennese have kept the opponent a secret, and this was only to be announced at a later date.
However, the Hütteldorfer reckoned without the opponent or the football and fan media coming from there. Because they are already leaking: Celtic Glasgow will meet Rapid at the Allianz Stadium on July 9th!
As a result, there is little doubt that last year’s champions will be visiting Hütteldorf under Australian coach Ange Postecoglou, even if the Green-Whites from Vienna have not yet confirmed.
Scandal game and reunion with Bolingoli
Above all, the football fan connects the scandalous game of 1984 with the duel between Celtic and Rapid. Hit by a projectile, Rudolf Weinhofer collapsed in Celtic Park. The Scots accused Rapid of staging. UEFA then imposed a replay at Old Trafford. Rapid advanced to the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup and only lost to Everton in the final.
When they met again in 2009 in the group stage of the Europa League, things were really more peaceful (1-1 in Glasgow, 3-3 in Vienna), as was the test match played in 2017 (1-1).
There will also be a reunion on July 9 with an ex-Rapidler. Left-back Boli Bolingoli, with Rapid from 2017 to 2019, is under contract with Celtic.
