Avalanche Studios Group is a Swedish game developer with offices in Stockholm, New York, Malmö and Liverpool. The business is divided into the three departments Avalanche Studios, Expansive Worlds and Systemic Reactions.
The company was founded in 2003 and specializes in games with large, open worlds. You are perhaps best known for the action series “Just cause”. It is also behind “Rage 2”, “Generation zero”, “Second extinction” and is working on the future smuggling game “Contraband”.
There is also an American company with the similar name Avalanche Software, which has nothing to do with the Swedish company.
“The hunter: Call of the wild” has become a perhaps somewhat unexpected Swedish bestseller, with over a million active players last year. Behind the title is Expansive Worlds, part of the Swedish Avalanche, and the game has been put together in Stockholm.
Now they hope to build on the success, but this time it is not four-legged animals and poultry that are responsible for the decoy sounds – but fish.
Digital fishing ethics
“Call of the wild: The angler” is a stand-alone title that explores large natural areas to find the very best fishing spots. Those who want to seek peace on their own can do so, but it is also possible to go on a joint fishing trip with up to eleven other interested parties.
– We must be one with nature in many ways. We must share the passion for outdoor life and act sustainably and responsibly in the game, even in our research. In “The angler” we have a “catch and release” setting. So even though the fish are digital, they are released back into the water, says director Paul Rustchynsky in a clip on Twitch.
A recipe for success in “The hunter” has been that Expansive Worlds, which is a relatively small studio, has been able to use Avalanche’s self-developed engine Apex to create the visually impressive and large landscapes.
Apex is also used in “The angler”, this time in the latest version, which is evident in crisper graphics and sharper sounds. In addition to magnificent natural areas, realism is in focus. The fish species have individual characteristics and it is important to choose the right equipment and technology to achieve success.
– We will have two completely different fishing techniques in the open world from the start. Both angling and fishing with a throwing rod in freshwater, says Rustchynsky.
The game will be released for PC this year, and will come later on console.
