In his intense campaign for the Rejection for the exit plebiscite on September 4, Senator Evópoli, Felipe Kast, was the target of criticism after making some statements regarding abortion in a radio advertisement broadcast in recent days.

“The Constitutional Convention allows abortion up to nine months of pregnancy. Not only does it violate Human Rights (…) we would be the only country that promotes and allows an abortion up to nine months of pregnancy. This does not protect women, because in fact what mother would want to have an abortion at nine months. In other words, it really is a lack of respect against women, “said Kast.

He also added that “that is why there are more of us who are disappointed with this new Constitution every day, who want changes, we even voted I Approve, but today we are not available for a proposal that divides our country.”

On the other hand, the draft of the new Constitution says regarding this issue that “all people are holders of sexual rights and reproductive rights. These include, among others, the right to decide freely, autonomous and informed about her own body, about the exercise of sexuality, reproduction, pleasure and contraception”.

It also adds that “the State guarantees the exercise of sexual and reproductive rights without discrimination, with a focus on gender, inclusion and cultural relevance (…) ensuring all women and people with the capacity to gestate, the conditions for a pregnancy, an interruption voluntary pregnancy, childbirth and voluntary and protected maternity.

Different versions between what the draft of the new Constitution dictates and what Senator Felipe Kast said, where the accommodated interpretation given by the authority of La Araucanía to promote its propaganda for Rejection is evident. As if that were not enough, the parliamentarian began to campaign in favor of Rejection outside the deadline established by Servel.

Kast himself responded to the wave of criticism received on Twitter, indicating that “false. Don’t misinform. The Constitution is above the laws. The laws regulate the implementation, but they can NEVER contradict what the Constitution says, because it would be unconstitutional. The Convention promotes free abortion, do not deny now what they wrote”.
