Two PP councillors, José Fernández and Almudena Maíllo, have left this Tuesday the press conference of the Madrid Pride 2022 when the president of the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals (FELGTB) has reproached the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, for not having placed the rainbow flag on the façade of Cibeles and affirming that “He is not everyone’s mayor.”

We are the flag. The Lord Mayor does not represent all citizens”, he has reproached Uge Sangil. Immediately, and after these words, the Center councilor and the Tourism delegate left the Thyssen Museum, where the press conference was held.

“The -LGTB- flag is carried inside, not outside”, It has been the response of the PP councilor to the media and after planting the LGTBI + associations.

“It’s a sign of LGBTphobia”

Even before starting the press conference, the president of FELGTB has accused the alderman of not wanting to represent all the people of Madrid by not hanging the rainbow flag in Cibeles after the ruling of the Superior Court of Justice of Aragon (TSJA) according to which estimates that Placing the LGTBI flag in Zaragoza City Hall does not violate the flag law.

Sangil has defended that the rainbow flag “is the banner of diversity, of the rainbow, of citizenship, which welcomes all citizens”, so not placing it “It’s a sign of LGTBphobia because he is a mayor who does not respect the citizenry”.

Given this, the opposition has accused the Almeida City Council of “sectarianism” and has criticized the fact that the rainbow flag does not fly on the facade of the Palacio de Cibeles, something that the law does allow.

“The PP abandons the presentation of Madrid Pride 2022. The largest event in Madrid and one of the most important in Europe. Sectarianism against the diversity of our city. Today like yesterday: Almeida put the flag in Cibeles”, wrote the councilor and spokesperson for Más Madrid in the City Council, Rita Master.

Boycott Pride

The president of the Parliamentary Group of Más Madrid has maintained the same line in the Assembly, Eduardo Rubino, who has accused the PP of trying to “boycott” Pride “putting all kinds of problems into the organization.”

“Pride is the heritage of Madrid and we deserve a City Hall to match“, he has opined on networks, where he has demanded both Almeida and Begoña Villacís to place the LGTBI flag on the Cibeles facade. “It is sectarianism against Pride and against a symbol of Madrid’s identity”, he added .

“The flag is carried within”

Upon his departure, the PP councilor José Fernández has affirmed before the media while leaving the act that “the flag is carried inside, you don’t have to carry it outside”.

He has also defended that Almeida is “the mayor of all Madrid residents, and as such deserves the respect of the whole world, and Pride cannot be manipulated.”

“In Madrid Pride is celebrated, Cibeles will be illuminated and the fountain too“, has added.
