The Lithuanian authorities have extended the ban on the transit of sanctioned goods to the Kaliningrad region not only by rail, but also by road transport.

“Partial restrictions on freight transit also apply to road transport passing through Lithuania. Therefore, as well as railway cargoes, today these cargoes can only be transported by sea,” Interfax was told in the press service of the government of the Kaliningrad region.

The same information was confirmed to the agency by several trucking companies. According to them, the Lithuanian customs is already deploying cars on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border at the Medininkai checkpoint, as a result of which a large line of freight trains has formed there.

On June 18, Lithuanian Railways stopped the passage of transit trains with goods that fell under EU sanctions. Vilnius explained the ban with clarifications from the European Commission, according to which the transit of goods prohibited from being imported into the EU would be a violation of sanctions. According to the governor of the Kaliningrad region, the ban affected from 40 to 50% of the range of goods that were transported between the Kaliningrad region and other regions of the Russian Federation.

The Russian authorities accused Lithuania of a transport “blockade” and demanded that the ban be lifted immediately, threatening retaliatory measures. On June 21, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev arrived in Kaliningrad and promised that the consequences of the Russian response “will have a serious negative impact on the population of Lithuania.”
