Uruguayan central defender Diego Godin said goodbye this Monday Atletico Mineiro Brazilian, a club that he arrived at last January and that he leaves six months before the end of his contract due to the lack of minutes in the team.

“I am leaving with the satisfaction of having always given the best of myself at all times, with a lot of professionalism, and having respected all those people that I will never forget,” said the 36-year-old defender in a message posted on his social networks.

Godín, one of the leaders of the Uruguayan team, which will be in the World Cup in Qatar that starts next November, said that since he joined the club in Belo Horizonte he met “a lot of good people” who helped him and “facilitated” his adaptation to the team dynamics.

“I want to thank everyone who works at Atlético Mineiro and makes this a great club,” he said.

Specifically, he wanted to thank the “management, coaching staff, all the ‘staff’ that work around the team, and of course that great fans, the ‘masa do Galo’,” he said.

“And a special mention to my teammates, who are a very humble group of champions, and that’s where the secret of this team’s success lies!” he added.

Godín had little game in the Brazilian squad

The departure of Godín, who wants a greater role in the field thinking about his set-up for Qatar, was anticipated on Sunday by the Mineiro coach, the Argentine Antonio ‘Turco’ Mohamed, at the press conference after the victory by 2-0 over him flamingoin the Brazilian Championship.

The coach confirmed that the goodbye of Godín, former player of Villarreal, Atlético de Madrid and Inter Milanamong other clubs, was produced by mutual agreement between the player himself, the coaching staff and the board of directors.

“It was the best decision” (…) Godín “is a great player” and “a great professional” who participated in the two titles won so far this season: the Brazilian Super Cup and the Mineiro Championship, he said.

Godín arrived at Mineiro, which in 2021 was proclaimed champion of the League and the Cup of Brazilwith the title band, but as the weeks went by it was losing space in Mohamed’s eleven.

Now, he says goodbye six months before the end of his contract, which expired in December, with the option of one more year; without having completed a dozen games with the roosters shirt and with a goal scored in his private account.

According to the Brazilian media, his next destination could be the Argentinian Vélez Sarsfield.
