US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced the intention of the American authorities to cooperate with the new Colombian President Gustav Petro and congratulated him on his new position.

“We look forward to working with President-elect Petro to further strengthen the US-Colombian relationship and move our countries towards a better future,” Blinken said in a statement posted on US State Department website.

The Secretary of State also stressed that the elections in Colombia were fair and free.

“We pay tribute to the many officials, civil servants and volunteers whose dedication made this election possible,” he concluded.

Earlier it was reported that the representative of the left-wing Historical Pact coalition, Senator Gustavo Petro, won the presidential elections in Colombia after counting 98.22% of the ballots. According to the voting results, Petro received 50.51% of the vote.
