Children born in the Kherson region after February 24, as well as orphans, will automatically receive Russian citizenship. This was stated to RIA Novosti by Kirill Stremousov, who is referred to by the Russian state media as the “deputy head of the military-civilian administration” of the Kherson region.
He claims that there is a “rush demand” for Russian passports in the region, and more than ten thousand applications have already been submitted for their issuance.
Since the beginning of March, the Kherson region has been almost entirely under the control of Russian troops. The “new authorities” of the region have repeatedly declared their desire to join Russia. At the end of May, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on a simplified procedure for applying for Russian citizenship for residents of the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine. On June 11, it was reported that the first Russian passports were issued in these regions.
