The nonagenarian composer celebrated his last birthday in the recording studio by nothing less than composing for starwars. However, it was surely an even more special moment for him, because it was John Williams himself who requested the opportunity to compose the theme song for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
With the series just around the corner, it’s only recently been revealed that Williams was the one who approached LucasFilms as soon as he learned of the series’ existence. The reason: the composer never really got a chance to compose a theme for the character. Although Obi-Wan’s passage is significant in the franchise, his moments were always tied to the journeys of other characters. The theme of Luke, the theme of the force, or the theme of his relationship with Anakin Skywalker are well remembered. But who remembers the Obi Wan theme?
The director of the series, Deborah Chow, commented the fortune of the entire team to have Williams back. Since he worked for the last episode of the Skywalker saga in 2019, the musician had not provided his services to the saga. So in addition, go back to configure the leitmotiv of such an important character for the franchise, it felt more than adequate.
“We were incredibly lucky, honestly very lucky,” says Chow. “It just worked because I had this very narrow window where I had a little bit of time. I think the most important thing, and the most important reason [por la que volvió] it was because, looking at all the trilogies, Obi-Wan was one of the few characters that I had never written a theme for. So he came by himself to write the song, and we were very lucky that it worked. For me, starwarsIt wouldn’t be the same without him. They are inextricably linked, also in an emotional way. It’s Star Wars with John Williams, so we were very grateful.”
Williams composed a theme that will be the basis for Natalie Holt to build from there the rest of the score. The composer had never worked with him, nor had she had the opportunity to collaborate on a project of such magnitude. However, she assured that no one could deny the teacher his request to return to give music to such a beloved character.
“Obi-Wan is a legacy character that John hadn’t written a theme for because he died so early in A new hopeHolt said. “He’s the only legacy character that he hadn’t done. So he talked to [la presidenta de Lucasfilm] Kathleen Kennedy and told him: ‘I just want to write a song for Benny’. So who can deny him that? And he did, he wrote Obi’s theme, and he just embodies the spirit of the series completely.”
On the theme song composed by John Williams, Deborah Chow said: “We heard it recorded live with an orchestra and I think it was very emotional for everyone. It felt very classic right away. It felt as if it had always existed. So it was quite emotional to hear that.”
Holt for his part assured in FV that the fans will be very happy after hearing it. Which is probably why it will become an instant classic by the composer.
“It’s thoughtful, and it’s completely appropriate,” he described. “And it distills what the show is about in the perfect way that only John Williams can. He is melancholic, but he has that element of hope. He’s doing something new and I think people are going to be really impressed.”
