Svenska Dagbladet: Sweden may apply to NATO on May 17

Sweden may apply to NATO on Tuesday, May 17, writes RIA Novosti with reference to the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

Swedish authorities are reportedly planning to apply to join the alliance on Tuesday at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.

Earlier, Finland and Sweden wanted to apply for NATO membership at the same time. They announced their intention to join the North Atlantic Alliance after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine. Finnish President Sauli Niiniste said that if states join NATO, this will contribute to the emergence of a “new kind of North”, more responsible, stable and strong.

At the same time, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Alexander Grushko said that the entry of Finland and Sweden into the North Atlantic Alliance will not remain without a political reaction. The diplomat clarified that the decision on the Russian reaction in the event that Finland and Sweden join NATO would not be made on emotions, since a thorough and verified analysis of all factors would follow.
