Trefilov said coach Voronkov should apologize to volleyball player Montalvo
Vice-President of the Russian Handball Federation Yevgeny Trefilov addressed the head coach of the Lokomotiv women’s volleyball club Andrey Voronkov, who called the Cuban Ailama Montalvo a monkey. His words are quoted by TASS.
Trefilov felt that Voronkov should find the courage to apologize to the black athlete. “Yes, then you can bite off your tongue, but you are a coach, you influence children. Parents have less influence on children than a coach, who for them is both a king and a god, and mom and dad. People came to our country to play,” he said, adding that we need to be more restrained.
On May 13, during a Russian women’s championship match, Voronkov called Montalvo a monkey. “Attention, concentration! Let’s let them go, give them oxygen! Why are you catching again? Why are you catching that monkey again?” – he said during a conversation with the wards. Uralochka urged Voronkov to apologize for his comments about the black volleyball player.
The meeting in Kaliningrad ended with a score of 3:2 (25:21, 25:20, 26:28, 20:25, 15:7) in favor of the owners of the site. Lokomotiv won the best-of-three series with a score of 3:2. The team won the gold of the championship of Russia for the second time.
