The head of the Williams team, Jost Capito, rules out replacing the French driver, Nicholas Latifi, in the middle of the Formula 1 season, since in his opinion the Frenchman has the potential to compete in the Great Circus.
“We have a contract with both drivers and we respect them. Latifi was only slightly slower than Albon Saturday. He needs more time to get used to the car, but he has our full support and we will not try to change our driver line-up during the course of the season,” Capito confirmed to SPORT1.
This clears up the doubt of the possible departure of Latifi from the team in this half season of Formula 1. If it happens, it would be at the end of the 2022 season, but at the moment it is not certain.
According to former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher, Williams’ biggest shareholder wants two strong drivers in the team. Albon is not in danger, since he is fully complying. But Latifi has three consecutive seasons in the big circus and, without a doubt, his third year is being the worst.
Nicholas Latifi must improve this season in order to remain in the Williams team, since if that does not happen, there are already several candidates who can fill his position the following year.
The candidates to replace him are Oscar Piastri and Nyck de Vries, but the former has a great advantage in reaching Latifi’s position if he is fired by the team at the end of the season.
